Saigon

Saigon is a composition for eight-part choir, consisting of two sopranos, two altos, two tenors, and two basses. It was composed during Spring 2024 under the direction of Dr. Saad Haddad, and was inspired by the Vietnam War and my junior year AP U.S. History course. The recording was performed by The Princeton Singers and conducted by Dr. Steven Sametz.

 

Each of the eight voices found throughout Saigon represent an anonymous person involved in the Vietnam War. Those singing this piece will decide for themselves who they want to portray and explore internally how the thoughts, beliefs, and motivations of that character tie into the text they sing. 

 

I do not pretend to understand what it was like to live through the Vietnam War, let alone fight in it, but instead offer a retrospective on the events, actions, and motivations of the war as they have been taught to me.

Memory

Memory is a composition for solo cello. It was composed throughout Winter 2023-24 under the direction of Dr. Saad Haddad. The recording was performed by Aaron Wolff.

 

Memory follows the journey of remembering—the first hints of memory into a full reliving of it, a moment of forgetting into an embracement of the memory in and of itself. The composition uses frequent time signature changes and the complete range of the cello to create a piece that captures the chaos, breadth, and beauty of the human mind.

Open Door

Open Door is a composition for flute and piano. It was composed during a three week composition intensive in July 2024 at University of North Carolina School of the Arts, under the direction of Dr. Michael Rothkopf. The recording was performed by Shauna Bierly (piano) and Isabel Avila (flute).

Open Door examines a decision and what results from it—the joy that comes with new opportunities, and the regrets that follow losing what you already had. It features percussive elements created by both the pianist and the flutist, the most notable of these being a knocking on the underside of the piano, resembling the ticking of a clock.
